A galette des rois is typically enjoyed during the celebration of Epiphany, which falls on January 6th.
This pastry is closely associated with the Christian holiday but is also enjoyed throughout the entire month of January in France. The galette des rois is essentially a puff pastry cake filled with almond cream (frangipane) or other sweet fillings, such as chocolate or fruit. The pastry is typically round and flat, often resembling a large, rustic-looking tart. It is adorned with a decorative pattern on top. A key feature of the galette des rois is the inclusion of a hidden trinket or figurine (la fève) inside the filling. This is like a French Bairín Breac! The person who discovers this figurine in their slice of galette is traditionally crowned as the "king" or "queen" of the celebration.
